Spray Tan Aftercare: What to Wear, Shower Timing & Week-One Rules

What to wear, how to sleep, when to hit the gym - the week-one aftercare routine that decides whether your spray tan lasts 4 days or 10.

Spray tan aftercare comes down to three things: stay dry until your first rinse, wear loose dark clothing while the color develops, and moisturize daily from day two onward. Get those right and the same tan that would have faded by Thursday will still look even the following weekend. We can usually tell within one question — "what did you do in the first eight hours?" — why one client's tan lasted ten days and another's barely made it to four. Here is the full routine, hour by hour and day by day.

What to Wear After a Spray Tan: The First 24 Hours

Wear loose, dark, breathable clothing after your spray tan — a flowy cotton dress, baggy sweats, an oversized tee — and skip anything tight until after your first rinse. The cosmetic bronzer in the solution can transfer onto fabric while the color develops, and tight seams press lines into a developing tan.

When clients ask what to wear after spray tan appointments, the specifics matter more than you would think. Skip the bra if you can, or choose a loose bralette; underwires and elastic bands are the most common cause of the pale stripes we get asked to fix. Choose flip-flops or loose slides over sneakers, because socks and snug shoes rub color off feet and ankles. Dark fabric is about protecting your clothes, not your tan — the bronzer usually washes out of cotton, but we would not test that theory on white silk. And leave the smartwatch on the nightstand until morning; a snug band leaves a crisp pale circle that takes days to blend.

What to Wear for Airbrush Tan Appointments

To the appointment itself, wear something loose you can slip off and back on without dragging fabric across damp skin — think a zip-up hoodie or a button-down dress rather than a tight pullover. During the session you can wear whatever you are comfortable in: old underwear, a swimsuit, or nothing at all; your artist works with every preference and keeps the whole session private.

Clients ask us what to wear for airbrush tan sessions more than almost anything else, and the honest answer is that the "after" outfit matters more than the "during" one. Bring your loose dark clothes with you if you are tanning away from home — for example, at a hotel before an event — so you are not re-dressing in the fitted outfit you arrived in. One more detail from years of practice: skip lotion, deodorant, and perfume before the session, since anything sitting on the skin can block the solution from developing evenly. With the artist who sprayed you, you are already home when the session ends, which removes most of the wardrobe problem entirely.

Your First Shower: Timing and Technique

Take your first shower 8 to 12 hours after your session — water only, lukewarm, no soap, no scrubbing — and pat dry rather than rubbing. Seeing bronze wash down the drain is normal; that is only the surface bronzer rinsing away, while the color in your skin stays put.

Rinse early and the tan develops lighter; wait a few extra hours and nothing bad happens at all. What the color should look like at each stage of that wait — hour one, the morning after, day five — is mapped out in what airbrush tan results look like hour by hour. If we have applied a rapid solution for a tight schedule, your rinse window is shorter and we give you the exact time before we leave — the timing question on its own, down to what the water should look like when you are done, is in how long to wait to shower after an airbrush tan. Showering after airbrush tan sessions follows the same rules for the rest of the week: warm rather than hot, mild wash rather than harsh gel, pat dry every time. Long hot showers are quiet tan killers.

A practical note on the first rinse that trips people up: skip the loofah, the exfoliating mitt and any body wash with acids or scrubbing beads for that first shower, and leave shaving until the following day. Anything abrasive lifts the newly developed top layer, and that is where all of your color lives. Hands are the only tool you need.

Sunless Tanning Tips and Tricks for Days Two Through Seven

From day two onward, the routine is simple: moisturize morning and night, keep showers short and warm, and avoid anything that soaks or scrubs your skin. Hydrated skin holds color; dry skin sheds it early and unevenly.

Most sunless tanning tips and tricks are really just ways of protecting that top layer of skin where the color lives. Use an oil-free moisturizer, since heavy oils break down the tan faster. Postpone exfoliating, shaving with a dull razor, waxing, and facials until you are ready to let the tan go. Pools and hot tubs are the big ones — chlorine and long soaks fade color faster than anything else we see, and the full SPF, pool and beach rules get their own guide. Sweat is fine once you are past the first rinse, so the gym is back on the menu from day two; just shower promptly afterward and re-moisturize. We covered the hydration piece in depth in our article on hydration and maintaining a perfect tan, and it pairs well with this one.

The First Night: Sleep, Sweat, and Small Mistakes

Sleep in loose long layers on sheets you do not mind bronzing slightly, keep the bedroom cool, and do not work out until after your first rinse. The first night is when a developing tan is most vulnerable, and most of the "what happened to my elbow?" photos we receive trace back to it.

Airbrush tan aftercare on night one is mostly about avoiding moisture in every form. No dishes without gloves, no steamy bathrooms while someone else showers, no sweaty spin class, and no crying at sad movies if you can help it — water droplets on developing color leave speckles. Wipe your palms with a damp cloth after touching your skin, and resist the urge to "check" the tan by rubbing it. By morning the hard part is over; rinse, moisturize, and get on with your week.

Week One at a Glance

If you remember nothing else, remember this rhythm: dry until the first rinse, gentle for the first day, moisturized every day after. Here is the whole week in one place.

Night one: loose dark clothes, cool bedroom, no workouts, no water on the skin. Morning after (8 to 12 hours in): lukewarm rinse, water only, pat dry — bronze in the drain is normal. Day two: back to regular life, with an oil-free moisturizer morning and night and a mild body wash in short, warm showers. Days three through five: this is peak tan; keep moisturizing, shave gently if you must, and skip pools, hot tubs, and long baths. Days six and seven: the fade begins, and hydration is what keeps it even instead of patchy — moisturize twice daily and you will usually fade to a soft gold; skip the lotion and the week tends to end in visible dry patches. When you are ready for the next appointment, exfoliate everything away first and start clean. None of it is difficult, and all of it shows up in your photos.
