First Spray Tan Tips: Frequency, Etiquette & What to Expect

By Natalie, Intansify tanning artist · 9+ years of mobile tanning in LA
The most useful spray tan tips for a first-timer fit in one sentence: shave and exfoliate the day before, arrive with clean, bare skin, and don't rinse until the time your artist gives you. Book the session one to two days before any event, and come back once the last tan has faded, roughly a week later. Everything else on this page (what to wear, whether to tip, what the appointment looks like) is detail, laid out in the order you'll need it.
Your First Spray Tan, Day by Day
The timeline below is the whole job. Each row says what to do and who says so; where the guides that rank for "spray tan tips" disagree, the next section explains why.
| When | What to do | Source |
|---|---|---|
| A month before a big event | Book a trial tan, so the trial color is gone before the real one | Easy Weddings: trial "no later than a month before your wedding" |
| Up to the day before | Moisturize as usual | Aglow: moisturize "up until the day before" |
| The day before | Shave or wax, then exfoliate, focusing on elbows, knees, hands, feet and ankles | Sjolie: "Shave or wax at least 24 hours before your session"; Palm Beach Tan on dry areas |
| Session day, before | Shower clean; skip lotion, deodorant, perfume and makeup | Palm Beach Tan: they "can create a barrier" |
| Session day, after | Loose, dark clothes; no workout, pool or rain | Palm Beach Tan; Sjolie: avoid "heavy sweating for the first 24 hours" |
| First rinse | At the time your artist gives you: a quick lukewarm rinse, no soap | Sjolie; rinse windows by solution below |
| 24–48 hours after | The color peaks: this is the event window | Sjolie: "Your true color peaks" |
| Days 3–7 | Moisturize daily, especially after showers | Palm Beach Tan; Sjolie |
| About a week on | Faded? Exfoliate what's left and re-tan | Canadian Dermatology Association: fades "3-7 days after application" |
If the tan is for one specific date, this is the rule that matters most:
Three Numbers the Top Guides Disagree On
The 8 organic results for "spray tan tips" (Google US desktop, DataForSEO, 2026-10-24) were four tanning salons or solution brands (Palm Beach Tan, A Shore Thing, MineTan, Aglow), a Reddit wedding-planning thread, a personal blog, a Who What Wear beauty column and a YouTube prep video. The AI Overview cited the blog (ladyh.life), Palm Beach Tan and Reddit. Every result is a prep or aftercare checklist, and on three points they give different numbers:
| Question | What the ranking pages say | Why they differ |
|---|---|---|
| When can I rinse? | Palm Beach Tan: at least 4 hours. MineTan: 1–4 hours, no more than 8. Aglow: 2–8 hours by solution. Who What Wear and the blog: 8 hours or overnight. Sjolie: 8 hours for standard, 1–5 for rapid solutions | Rapid and standard solutions are built for different wait times. The number belongs to the solution, which is why your artist gives you one |
| When can I shave? | Sjolie and Aglow: at least 24 hours before. Palm Beach Tan: keep your routine, but wait 4 hours after the tan | Aglow warns that shaving right before a session can make the result patchy; the day before is the safe overlap |
| How many days before an event? | Palm Beach Tan: two or three days. Sjolie: the 24–48 hour window when color peaks | Both put the event in the first days after the tan; one to two days before is the overlap |
The practical upshot: any single checklist you find is right for the solution that brand sells. Follow your artist's rinse time over a number from the internet.
How Often Can You Spray Tan?
You can spray tan again as soon as the last one has faded, which for most people is about a week. There's no required waiting period: the color forms only in the outer layer of dead skin cells and leaves as that layer sheds (Canadian Dermatology Association). The CDA puts the fade at 3–7 days; tanning-solution makers quote 7–10 days for a well-applied tan with good aftercare (Sjolie).
The one rule: clear the old color before the new goes on. Palm Beach Tan's guide tells clients to avoid exfoliating between sessions "until you're ready for your next spray tan," then exfoliate before the next one. That keeps the new layer from landing on a patchy base. Keeping skin hydrated between sessions also helps a tan fade evenly; we wrote about that in our hydration guide.
Your First Spray Tan: What Actually Happens
A first spray tan with a mobile artist takes about 30 minutes. We arrive, set up a pop-up tent wherever you have a few feet of floor, match a shade to your skin tone, spray, dry, and leave.
Here's the sequence. Your artist brings everything: tent, machine, solution, towels. Setup takes about ten minutes. Then a short consult about your skin tone, how deep you want the color and any events coming up, and the solution is chosen to match. You undress to whatever level you're comfortable with, step into the tent, and follow simple posing cues while a fine, cool mist goes on. The spraying itself takes 10 to 15 minutes. A few minutes under the drying fan, loose clothes on, and we pack up while you carry on with your day.
The color you see right away is a cosmetic bronzer, a guide color that washes off in the first rinse (Sjolie). The tan itself starts to show 2–4 hours after the spray and keeps deepening for one to three days (CDA). The solution is organic, with a faint scent that airs out quickly. Airbrush Tan Prep, Kept Simple
Good airbrush tan prep comes down to three moves: shave and exfoliate the day before, arrive with nothing on your skin (no lotion, no deodorant, no makeup), and have loose, dark clothes ready for afterward. The full day-before and day-of version, timing details included, lives in our complete preparation checklist. Most airbrush tan tips you'll find online are variations on the same points, as the table above shows; the checklist puts them in order.
What Do You Wear During the Session?
Whatever you're comfortable in: old underwear, a swimsuit bottom, or nothing. Men usually keep underwear or shorts on. There is no dress code.
Your artist is focused on one thing: even coverage. Whatever you wear may catch a little overspray, so make it something you don't mind tinting, and don't test it on silk. If you'd rather not risk anything you own, ask for disposable underwear when you book. The tent gives you privacy, and the actual spraying takes 10 to 15 minutes.
Afterward: loose, dark clothing. A flowy dress, joggers, an oversized tee. Skip bras, leggings and anything with tight elastic for the rest of the day; tight clothes rub the surface before the color has set (Palm Beach Tan, Sjolie).
Do You Tip a Mobile Tanning Artist?
Tipping is your choice. The salon norm is 20%: Groupon's spa and salon tipping guide calls tipping "customary after an airbrush tan, where 20% of the full price is standard" (Groupon).
While we're on etiquette: you can chat during the session or stay quiet, both are normal. Your dog can watch, though we'd rather it watched from outside the tent. And you don't need to deep-clean your home: we need a few square feet of floor and an outlet, and the tent catches the overspray. If you're tanning before a big event and nerves are running the show, say so, and we'll talk you through each step as it happens.
What Will Ruin a Spray Tan?
Four things, all avoidable once you know them.
- Booking the morning of the event. The color is still developing for one to three days, so it won't look like the finished tan yet.
- Rinsing too soon. Cutting the wait short shortens development. Some color washing off in that first rinse is the bronzer leaving, not your tan.
- Sweat and water before the first rinse. Skip the gym, hot yoga, pools and rain; Palm Beach Tan says at least 4 hours, Sjolie says avoid heavy sweating for the first 24.
- Skipping moisturizer. Daily moisturizer from the first full day on helps the tan fade evenly; Sjolie, a solution maker, says the habit "can add 2-3 extra days to every tan."
The often-repeated airbrush tan rules about faces apply too: expect your artist to use a lighter mist on your face. Norvell, a solution maker, trains artists to spray face, hands and feet from about 12 inches and avoid layering, because "a light mist and subtle blending prevent tanning solutions from getting too dark" (Norvell). If you'd rather skip the face on a first appointment, say so before the spray starts. Of all the sunless tanning tips in this guide, the face is the one place where less is better.
FAQ
What are the dos and don'ts of a spray tan?
Do shave and exfoliate the day before, arrive with clean bare skin, wear loose dark clothes afterward, and moisturize daily once you've rinsed. Don't apply lotion, deodorant or makeup before the session, don't sweat or swim before the first rinse, and don't book it the morning of an event.
Can I shave 2 hours before a spray tan?
It's better not to. Sjolie and Aglow both say to shave or wax at least 24 hours before. Palm Beach Tan is more relaxed about shaving before, but says to wait at least 4 hours after the tan.
How many days after a spray tan does it look best?
One to two days. Color starts showing 2–4 hours after the session and keeps developing for one to three days; Sjolie puts the peak in the 24–48 hour window.
What are the downsides of getting a spray tan?
It doesn't last: the color fades within about a week as skin sheds. It gives no sun protection, so you still need sunscreen; the Canadian Dermatology Association recommends broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Fragrances in some products can irritate sensitive skin, and the CDA advises keeping the spray away from eyes, nose and lips (CDA). If you have a skin condition, ask your doctor first; we make color, not medical calls.
